King Sago (Cycas revoluta) or Japanese Sago are actually ancient tropical Cycads and are not members of the palm family. They will reach 2-3' tall as an indoor potted plant but can grow to 10' tall and wide in the right outdoor landscape. Their large growth and tropical look give them architectural flair and they are used as specimen plants for residential and commercial landscapes. The sago like bright direct sunlight and light shade and should be moved indoors to avoid frost and freezing temperatures. During dryer cooler temperatures they should be misted and kept over a small tray of water filled with pebbles so that their roots do not sit in the water. Water every 1 to 2 weeks when the top inch or two of soil is dry but do not overwater. During the growing season feed every 6 weeks with a little bit of weak liquid fertilizer. When potting up your Sago you need to use a loose potting medium that retains moisture but drains well. Shipping and handling can be very tough on live plants so please be sure to open and check your plant right away. Mist the foliage and check the soil for moisture.
