Enlisted men and women come from all over the country to Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island to shed their previous identities and become Marines. They are transformed through rigorous basic training, understanding the Corps shared legacy, and learning a commitment to the Marines core values, preparing them to win Americas battles across the globe. Approximately 17,000 recruits are trained at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island each year. This involves a thirteen-week process during which the Corps cuts the recruit off from the civilian world in order to integrate Marine Corps lifestyle. The drill instructors train recruits in a wide variety of subjects including weapons training, Marine Corps Martial Arts Program, personal hygiene and cleanliness, close order drill, and Marine Corps history. The training emphasizes physical fitness and combat effectiveness. Recruits must pass minimum curriculum standards and complete a 54-hour simulated combat exercise known as "The Crucible". Minted in nickel, imbued with rich enamel colors on both sides, and given an antique finish, this coin pays tribute to the United States Marine Corps proud tradition and legacy of honor. The obverse of the coin features the famous yellow footprints outside the Receiving Building where new recruits are given their first lesson in military bearing, along with the words, Where Marines Are Made. The reverse bears the logo of the base, highlighted with colorful enamel. United States Marine Corps. Officially Licensed Product of the United States Marine Corps
